Craft TechniqueHand Hammering, Hand-Pierced Cutwork

This hammered brass globe pendant light is shaped as a full sphere, its surface covered in small hand-struck facets, with a ring of arched windows cut around the lower edge. When the lamp is lit, the polished brass interior glows warm gold, and each arch throws a soft, tall shadow onto the wall behind it, like a row of lit doorways.

Two Techniques by Abdul Jalil

Each globe is made by Abdul Jalil, the master lamp artisan of Souq Nhas, who has worked brass and copper in Marrakech’s old metalworkers’ market for more than 30 years. He shapes the sphere with Dinanderie, hand-hammering a flat brass sheet into a rounded form on an iron anvil, which leaves the dimpled texture you can see across the surface. He then cuts the arches with Serrouj, threading a fine jeweler’s saw through a small starter hole and guiding it by hand around each opening. Because both steps are done by hand, the facets and the arch lines vary slightly from one lamp to the next.

Where It Works Best

Hang a row of three over a kitchen island, a pair above a dining table, or a single 25–30 cm globe beside a bed or reading chair, where the arch shadows can reach the wall. In cafés and bars, a line of globes at slightly different heights turns a long counter into a feature. Browse our full Moroccan lighting collection to pair it with wall and table lamps.

Care

Dust the globe and the arched openings with a soft, dry cloth. Brass slowly deepens in tone over time; for cleaning or brightening the finish, follow our brass care and polishing guide, and avoid abrasive pads that could flatten the hammered texture.
