A Tote Woven by Hand in Marrakech’s Bab Debbagh Quarter
This basketweave brown leather tote bag combines the handwoven intrecciato technique with the everyday practicality of a structured shoulder handbag. Each strip of full-grain sheep leather is hand-cut and woven into a diagonal basketweave pattern across the front panel, framed by smooth leather bands — crafted by Omar, the Marrakech leather craftsman, in Marrakech’s Bab Debbagh tannery district. The 11.8 x 11.8 x 2.0 in (30 x 30 x 5 cm) silhouette holds daily essentials without excess bulk, and the magnetic snap closure keeps them secure.
Key Features
- Basketweave intrecciato front panel: handwoven diagonal weave in full-grain sheep leather; smooth solid leather on the reverse
- Full-grain sheep leather: the top layer of the hide with the grain intact — develops a richer patina with each season
- Linen-lined interior: one main compartment with one zip pocket for valuables
- Magnetic snap closure: quick access without a zipper track
- Zinc alloy hardware: sturdy and understated
- Dual shoulder straps: approximately 50 cm drop for comfortable shoulder carry
- Dimensions: 11.8 x 11.8 x 2.0 in (30 x 30 x 5 cm)
The Artisan Behind This Bag
Omar, the Marrakech leather craftsman, works in Marrakech’s Bab Debbagh tannery district — the city’s centuries-old leather quarter where hides are still processed using methods passed down through generations. He selects full-grain sheep leather for its supple hand and tight grain, cuts each strip against a steel template, and weaves the intrecciato panel by hand before stitching the final assembly with waxed thread. In Bab Debbagh, the full cycle from raw hide to finished leather still happens within two kilometers of where the bag is assembled — one of the last urban tannery districts in the world where this is true.
Care & Longevity
Full-grain sheep leather softens and deepens in color with regular use. Keep the bag dry, condition it two to three times a year with a beeswax or lanolin balm, and avoid prolonged direct sunlight. Follow our Moroccan leather care guide for conditioning schedules, stain removal tips, and how to encourage an even patina over the first year.
