Straw Lamps

A straw lampshade does something no metal or glass fitting can: it makes light feel alive. Woven from doum palm leaves, raffia, or rattan, the natural fiber diffuses light through hundreds of tiny gaps in the weave, casting a soft, dappled pattern that shifts as the material settles and the room’s ambient light changes. The effect is simultaneously warm and architectural — adding texture overhead without visual weight.

Every piece in this collection is handwoven by Dounia and the women of Al Amal cooperative, working in the lanes near Bab Doukkala in Marrakech’s medina. Their technique follows a UNESCO-recognised tradition of date-palm weaving — each shade coiled and bound entirely by hand, strand by strand, without machinery or molds. Dounia learned to weave from her mother; the cooperative she founded now supports a dozen families and has brought a centuries-old craft to interiors across Europe, North America, and Japan. The Collection

Styles range from small bell-shaped pendants ($73) to oversized three-tiered chandeliers ($152). Palm leaf domes come in three sizes ($77–$127); conical palm leaf pendants in small, medium, and large ($77–$97); fringe-trimmed bohemian pendants in three sizes ($73–$93); and the Grand Handwoven Straw Chandelier at 50cm diameter ($152). We also carry a straw round table lamp with lemon wood base ($173) for desk or bedside use. All shades fit standard pendant fittings and ship free worldwide.

These pieces work across interior styles: bohemian, coastal, Japandi, biophilic, and warm minimalist. They pair naturally with brass accents, linen textiles, and terracotta — and just as well with white plaster walls and concrete floors.
