The Artisan Behind This Bag

Omar, the Marrakech leather craftsman, works within Marrakech’s Bab Debbagh tannery district — where hides are still soaked in limestone and moved through vats of pomegranate rind, indigo, and henna the way they have been for five centuries. He selects full-grain sheep leather for its lighter weight and fine grain, then cuts each panel by hand against steel templates before pressing the basket-weave pattern and stitching the seams with waxed thread. In Marrakech’s Bab Debbagh quarter, the entire vegetable-tanning cycle — from raw hide to finished leather — still happens within two kilometers of where this backpack is assembled.
