A Moroccan wall sconce serves two functions simultaneously: it lights a space and it decorates the wall it occupies. When unlit, a hand-engraved brass sconce reads as sculptural wall art — the arabesque patterns and filigree work visible as fine relief against the metal surface. When lit, the cutwork activates: light pushes through each pierced opening and projects its pattern onto the surrounding wall, creating an effect that changes with viewing angle and ambient light.

Every sconce in this collection is hand-engraved and hand-pierced in Marrakech using traditional naqsh (engraving) and serrouj (piercing) techniques developed over centuries in the city’s metalworking quarter. How do you mount a Moroccan wall sconce?

Most sconces in our collection use standard back-plate mounting — two screws into the wall at the fixture's mounting holes. For hardwired sconces (direct wall connection, no visible cord), you will need an electrician to run wiring to the mounting position before installation. For plug-in or cord-connected sconces, installation is DIY-friendly: drill two anchor points, hang the fixture, and run the cord to the nearest outlet. Product descriptions specify whether each sconce is hardwired or plug-in. On drywall, use appropriate wall anchors rated for the fixture's weight.

Are Moroccan brass wall sconces suitable for outdoor use?

The Brass Outdoor Sconce (11.8") is specifically designed and treated for exterior use on sheltered walls — covered porches, entranceways, and courtyard walls. Standard indoor sconces should not be exposed to direct rain as sustained moisture accelerates corrosion. For outdoor decorative use in a sheltered position (loggia, covered terrace), the cylindrical and lantern-style sconces work well in dry climates. What is the difference between a sconce and a pendant for wall lighting?

A wall sconce is fixed directly to the wall with no suspension — the fixture mounts flush or extends via a bracket, and the light source is contained within the wall-mounted body. A pendant hangs from the ceiling on a cord. Sconces are ideal for spaces where ceiling mounting is not possible (staircases, narrow hallways, beside headboards) and for creating a lower, more intimate light layer in a room that already has ceiling lighting. In Moroccan interior design, sconces are traditionally used in pairs flanking doorways, fireplaces, or bed headboards.

How far apart should Moroccan wall sconces be spaced?

When installing sconces in pairs (flanking a mirror, fireplace, or headboard), space them so the centres are roughly equal to the width of the object they flank. For a 100cm mirror: place sconce centres at approximately 60–70cm apart. For headboard flanking on a king bed: space sconces 140–150cm apart (one above each bedside table). When installing a row of sconces along a hallway or staircase, 90–120cm centre-to-centre spacing provides even light distribution without clustering. Mount the centre of each sconce at 150–160cm from floor level.

Do the large circular wall sconces require special wiring?

The large circular LED wall sconces (Hand Engraved Round Brass Lamp, 40cm–100cm) are integrated LED fixtures — they come pre-fitted with LED light source and do not require a separate bulb. These are hardwired fixtures that require professional electrical installation. The wiring connects at the back plate. Standard single-phase residential wiring is sufficient.
