This hammered brass wall sconce is a decorative cover that fits over an existing wall light, stacking five curved bands of thick brass into a stepped, sculptural silhouette. Each band is shaped by hand in the Dinanderie tradition, the Moroccan craft of hammering flat metal sheet into form, so the whole surface is covered in small facets that catch and scatter light. Once your wall light is on, light escapes from the open top and bottom and glows softly through the gaps between the tiers, washing the wall above and below in a warm brass tone.

How the Antique Finish Is Made
Dinanderie begins with flat brass sheet, an iron anvil and a progression of hammer heads. Each band is worked blow by blow, so no two facets are identical and no two sconces are exactly alike. The formed brass is then coated with a thinned black finish that settles into the recesses of the hammer marks, while the raised facets keep their golden shine. The result reads like an aged piece from the first day it goes on your wall.
The Artisan Behind the Sconce
This sconce comes from the workshop of Abdul Jalil, the master lamp artisan of Souq Nhas, Marrakech’s old copper and brass market, where he has worked at the same bench for over 30 years. Hand-hammering is one of the three techniques he practices, alongside Naqsh hand-engraving and Serrouj fretwork cut with a jeweler’s saw.
Where It Works Best
Mounted in pairs, the sconce frames a bed, a mirror or a large piece of art. Repeated along a hallway or above a restaurant banquette, its up-and-down light creates a steady rhythm on plaster, limewash and textured walls. The heavy hammered texture sits comfortably in warm minimalist, Art Deco and Moroccan-inspired interiors.
Care
Dust with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid metal polish and abrasive pads, which would remove the darkened finish from the hammer marks. For general guidance on brass, see our brass care and polishing guide.
