The Artisan Behind This Bag

Omar, the Marrakech leather craftsman, works in Marrakech’s Bab Debbagh tannery district — the centuries-old quarter where hides are still cured in limestone pits and moved through vats of natural dye the same way they have been for five hundred years. He selects each cowhide individually, cuts every panel by hand, and stitches the seams with waxed thread. Bab Debbagh-tanned leather from Marrakech is among the few remaining places on earth where the full tanning cycle — from raw hide to finished leather — happens within two kilometers of where the bag is assembled.
