A White Beni Ourain Rug Woven in the Middle Atlas Tradition
This white Beni Ourain rug brings together everything that has made this Atlas Mountain weaving tradition a cornerstone of interior design for decades: a creamy ivory ground of 100% natural undyed wool, a high-pile surface of 1.5–2 inches, and the bold charcoal diamond-lozenge geometric pattern that reads as graphic as any modern print while remaining entirely hand-knotted. Available in three sizes — 3′ x 5′ (0.9 x 1.5 m), 3′ x 6′ (0.9 x 1.8 m), and 6′7″ x 9′10″ (2 x 3 m) — it works from a bedside accent to a living room anchor.
Essential Details
- Material: 100% natural undyed wool — the ivory base and charcoal pattern come from the sheep’s natural fleece, not from dyes
- Pile height: 1.5–2 inches — soft and insulating underfoot, with enough depth to ground a seating arrangement
- Pattern: Traditional diamond lozenge motifs with crossed diagonal lines — a protective symbol in Amazigh (Berber) textile culture
- Backing: Bare weave (no backing) — the hand-knotted structure is visible and breathable from below
- Fringe: Knotted wool tassels on both short ends, a natural finish of the hand-knotting process
- Natural variation: Slight shade differences between batches are inherent to undyed natural wool — each rug is one of a kind
The Weavers Behind This Rug
This rug is woven by the Tiftilin weavers of the Middle Atlas — Amazigh women who have passed this craft from mother to daughter across generations in the cedar-forested highlands south of Fès. Beni Ourain rugs hand-knotted by Amazigh weavers of the Middle Atlas are among the most widely cited examples of living North African textile craft. Every piece is made to order — please allow approximately 30 days for production before your rug ships.
Care & Longevity
Natural wool rugs reward simple, consistent care. Vacuum weekly on the lowest suction setting (no beater bar), rotate every six months to even wear, and spot-clean with cold water and mild soap only. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. For full care instructions, visit our Moroccan wool rug care guide.
For Interior Designers & Trade Buyers
This rug is available through our trade, hospitality, and interior sourcing program for designers, hotels, boutiques, and retail buyers sourcing authentic Moroccan wool rugs at scale. Custom sizing requests are considered case by case. Explore our full Moroccan rug collection or browse our guide to Moroccan-modern living room design for styling ideas.
A: Care instructions depend entirely on the material.
- For Natural Straw Rugs: Shake the rug vigorously outdoors to remove dirt. For spills, use a "dry bath" method: sprinkle baking soda or a dry rug shampoo, let it sit, and then vacuum it up. Do not steam clean or drench the fibers, as they can mildew.
- For 100% Wool Rugs: Vacuum 1-2 times per week using a suction-only setting. Never use a beater bar or rotating brush, as it can damage the hand-knotted fibers. For spills, act immediately: blot (do not rub) with a clean cloth. For a deep clean, professional cleaning is recommended.
- For Cactus Silk/Sabra Rugs: CRITICAL: DRY CLEAN ONLY. DO NOT USE WATER or any liquid. The natural vegetable dyes are not colorfast and will bleed, causing irreversible damage to the rug.
A: Yes, this is completely normal and a sign of an authentic, high-quality, hand-knotted wool rug. This "shedding" is simply the excess loose fibers from the shearing and hand-crafting process and is not a defect. This is a temporary phase that will gradually stop with regular, gentle vacuuming (using a suction-only attachment).
A: Yes. Every rug in our collection is 100% handmade from start to finish. As noted in our product details, each rug is "Handwoven by Berber women artisans in the Atlas Mountains, Morocco". You can see the authenticity in the "slightly irregular diamond motifs" and by inspecting the knots on the back. Unlike machine-made rugs, which have perfect, identical knots, our artisan-made pieces have slight, unique variations that are the signature of a true, one-of-a-kind work of art.
A: This depends on the material you choose:
- Cactus Silk Rugs: Not Recommended. These are delicate, decorative art pieces. Because they are Dry Clean Only and can be permanently damaged by water or pet accidents, we do not recommend them for high-traffic areas, kids, or pets.
- Wool Rugs: Excellent Choice. 100% wool is naturally durable, resilient, and stain-resistant, making it a perfect choice for living rooms, hallways, and homes with kids. For pets, we recommend a darker or patterned wool rug, which is great at camouflaging fur.
- Natural Straw Rugs: Best Choice for Durability. This rug is specifically designed to "withstand heavy foot traffic" and is suitable for "Indoor and outdoor use".
A: Cactus Silk, also known by its traditional name 'Sabra' or 'vegetable silk,' is a luxurious, eco-friendly, and sustainable textile. it is derived from the "eco-friendly Agave Sabra fibers" , which come from a Saharan aloe vera cactus. These plant-based fibers are harvested, washed, dyed, and hand-spun into a lustrous thread that serves as a beautiful, "cruelty-free alternative to traditional silk".
A: These are not just decorative patterns; they are ancient Berber symbols woven by the artisans to tell a story or provide protection.
- Diamond: Seen on our Beni Ourain rugs, this is a powerful and traditional symbol of protection, believed to ward off the "evil eye".
- Zigzag: This symbol often represents water, the flow of life, and continuity.
- Cross: This is used as a symbol of harmony between the physical and spiritual worlds.
A: We offer a range of sizes, including "Runner," "Medium," "Large," and "Extra Large". The two most common styling rules are:
- The "Accent" Approach: For a standard living room, use a "Medium" rug (like a 6'x9' or 8'x10') centered under your coffee table. Ideally, the front legs of your sofa and any armchairs should sit on the rug, which connects the space.
- The "Anchor" Approach: For a large or open-concept room, use an "Extra Large" rug (like 9'x12' or bigger) to "ground" the entire setting. In this layout, all your furniture (sofa, armchairs, coffee table) should sit completely on the rug.
A: Yes. This is a core value of our brand.
- Sustainably Made: We are committed to using natural, renewable, and biodegradable materials. Our collection is built on "100% natural undyed wool", "eco-friendly Agave Sabra fibers", and "Natural straw".
- Ethically Made: Every rug is "Handwoven by Berber women artisans". As stated in our product descriptions, "Your purchase sustains Berber women weavers and preserves endangered textile traditions".
A: es. Because nearly every rug is "made to order", customization is a standard part of our service. As noted on many product pages, "We offer customization options, including bespoke dimensions, subtle pattern variations, and custom pile heights". Please contact us to discuss your specific project.
A: Each rug is a unique piece of art handcrafted specifically for you. The "Weaving Time" is listed on the product page, which is typically "4 weeks custom creation per rug". This made-to-order model ensures our artisans have the time to create your piece with the exceptional quality and care it deserves.

Amazing customer service and amazing product! We are so happy with our rug not only is it absolutely gorgeous but it’s the thickest softest rug I’ve ever owned. It’s like laying on a mattress! Perfect for my baby who is learning to crawl and stand up. I feel so much better that if he falls it will be on a very thick soft rug. The rug design is high quality and elegant and transformed our living room! Thank you so much!! Very much worth the wait to be made!!
