Moroccan Brass Pendant Light – Hand-Pierced Fish Scale Globe, 20–60 cm

Switch it on and the wall behind it fills with overlapping fans of light. This Moroccan brass pendant light is a raw brass globe pierced with hundreds of tiny holes arranged in a fish scale pattern: rows of fan-shaped arches that project the same scalloped shapes onto walls, ceilings and worktops once lit.

Pierced and Engraved by Hand

The globe is shaped from brass and decorated using two traditional Moroccan metalwork techniques. Naqsh (hand engraving) traces the outline of each fan, and Serrouj (pierced fretwork) punches the dotted openings through the brass one at a time. The result is a geometric pattern that reads clearly when the lamp is off and turns into a soft, textured glow when it is on. A wide opening at the base, also pierced, lets light fall downward onto the table or floor beneath it.

Choosing Your Size

The 20 and 25 cm globes suit bedside drops, reading corners and small entryways. The 30 to 40 cm sizes work over dining tables or as a single statement light in a bedroom or living room. The 50 and 60 cm globes are made for high ceilings, stairwells, hotel lobbies and restaurant dining rooms. For a kitchen island, hang two or three matching globes in a row, or mix neighbouring sizes at staggered heights for a cluster.

The Artisan Behind the Lamp

This pendant is made in the workshop of Abdul Jalil, the master lamp artisan of Souq Nhas, the coppersmiths’ quarter of the Marrakech medina. Because every opening is pierced by hand, the spacing of the dots varies slightly from lamp to lamp, and no two shadow patterns are exactly alike.

Brass Care
