A: Embossing pushes metal from behind to create raised relief — the pattern sits above the original surface. Hand carving cuts into the surface from the front — the pattern sits below the original surface in incised grooves. Carved patterns have sharp shadow lines in the grooves; embossed patterns have light-catching ridges. Tactilely, carved grooves are more pronounced and irregular.

Q: Does the carved surface make the teapot harder to clean?
