Straw Lamps
A straw lampshade does something no metal or glass fitting can: it makes light feel alive. Woven from doum palm leaves, raffia, or rattan, the natural fiber diffuses light through hundreds of tiny gaps in the weave, casting a soft, dappled pattern that shifts as the material settles and the room’s ambient light changes. The effect is simultaneously warm and architectural — adding texture overhead without visual weight.
Every piece in this collection is handwoven by Dounia and the women of Al Amal cooperative, working in the lanes near Bab Doukkala in Marrakech’s medina. Their technique follows a UNESCO-recognised tradition of date-palm weaving — each shade coiled and bound entirely by hand, strand by strand, without machinery or molds. Dounia learned to weave from her mother; the cooperative she founded now supports a dozen families and has brought a centuries-old craft to interiors across Europe, North America, and Japan. The Collection
Styles range from small bell-shaped pendants ($73) to oversized three-tiered chandeliers ($152). Palm leaf domes come in three sizes ($77–$127); conical palm leaf pendants in small, medium, and large ($77–$97); fringe-trimmed bohemian pendants in three sizes ($73–$93); and the Grand Handwoven Straw Chandelier at 50cm diameter ($152). We also carry a straw round table lamp with lemon wood base ($173) for desk or bedside use. All shades fit standard pendant fittings and ship free worldwide.
These pieces work across interior styles: bohemian, coastal, Japandi, biophilic, and warm minimalist. They pair naturally with brass accents, linen textiles, and terracotta — and just as well with white plaster walls and concrete floors.
Straw Lampshade Questions Answered
Natural fiber lampshades are safe when used with the correct bulb. We strongly recommend LED bulbs only — they produce very little heat compared to incandescent or halogen bulbs. Keep the bulb wattage at 8W maximum for enclosed shades. Ensure the bulb does not make direct contact with the shade interior. All our lampshades are designed with adequate clearance for standard LED bulbs and comply with general safety guidelines for decorative natural fiber lighting.
Palm leaf shades are woven from doum palm fronds — lightweight, with a slightly rough, matte texture and natural pale gold to straw colour. Raffia shades use softer, thinner fibers stripped from raffia palm leaves — they have a finer weave, smoother surface, and create a more delicate shadow pattern. Rattan shades are made from the outer skin of rattan cane — denser, more structured, with a visible grain and slightly more formal appearance. All three are natural, biodegradable, and sustainably sourced.
Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth or low-suction vacuum attachment — natural fiber traps dust more readily than smooth surfaces. For spot cleaning, use a barely damp cloth and allow to dry completely before switching the lamp back on. Avoid soaking or submerging natural fiber shades, as prolonged moisture weakens the fibers and may cause warping. Do not use chemical cleaners. In humid climates, ensure good air circulation around the shade to prevent mold growth.
Yes — this is one of the most common design questions we receive, and the answer is consistently yes. Natural fiber pendants have become a staple of Japandi, warm minimalism, and biophilic design precisely because their organic texture provides visual warmth without colour or pattern. A single palm leaf dome pendant over a dining table in an otherwise white-and-oak interior creates exactly the kind of textural contrast that makes a room feel complete rather than staged. The key is scale: choose a shade proportional to the space.
With normal indoor use, a well-maintained handwoven straw or palm leaf lampshade lasts many years. Natural fibers are more durable than they appear — the coiling and binding technique used by Al Amal cooperative creates a tightly interlocked structure that resists unravelling with regular handling. The main risks are prolonged exposure to direct sunlight (which fades and brittle the fibers over time) and sustained moisture. Keep shades away from open windows in rainy weather and avoid placement in direct afternoon sun.
Our lampshades are sold as shades only — without electrical cord or ceiling canopy — as fitting types and cord length requirements vary by country and ceiling height. The shades have a standard opening at the top compatible with universal pendant lamp holders (E26/E27). We recommend having a local electrician fit the cord and ceiling canopy for hardwired installations, or using a standard pendant cord kit available from most hardware stores for plug-in setups.
