A Bucket Bag Woven Strip by Strip in Marrakech
This woven leather bucket bag is a drawstring shoulder bag made from narrow strips of full-grain goat leather, interlaced by hand into a diagonal basketweave across the entire body. The technique, often called intrecciato, gives the leather a soft, flexible structure and a texture that catches the light differently on every square. Braided leather cords run through solid brass eyelets to cinch the top closed, then carry the bag on your shoulder or in your hand.
What Makes This Woven Bucket Bag Different
- Hand-woven basketweave: every leather strip is woven by hand, not printed or embossed onto a flat panel
- Full-grain, vegetable-tanned goat leather: the top layer of the hide with the grain intact, tanned with plant-based materials instead of chrome, so it grows softer and richer in tone as you carry it
- Braided drawstring straps: the same leather cords that close the bag double as shoulder straps or a hand-carry loop
- Suede-lined interior: one roomy main compartment, a zip pocket for keys and cards, and a magnetic snap at the top
- Solid brass hardware: antique-finish eyelets, snap and zip pull that age with the leather
- Dimensions: 30 x 26 x 13 cm (11.8 x 10.2 x 5.1 in), sized for a phone, wallet, sunglasses and a small pouch
Two Colors, One Silhouette
Dark Brown is a deep chocolate tone that pairs with linen, denim and everyday neutrals. Petrol Blue is an inky blue with a teal cast that makes the weave stand out against light outfits. Both share the same relaxed bucket shape, braided cords and brass details.
The Artisan Behind This Bag
This bag is made by Omar, the Marrakech leather craftsman, who works with hides from the Bab Debbagh tannery district, the city’s historic leather quarter. There, goat skins are vegetable-tanned with natural ingredients such as pomegranate rind, indigo and henna before Omar cuts them into strips and weaves each panel by hand. Because the leather is tanned and woven by hand, small variations in tone from strip to strip are part of each bag’s character.
Care & Longevity
Dust the weave with a soft dry brush or cloth, keep the bag away from heavy rain, and condition it lightly two or three times a year with a neutral balm. When you are not using it, fill it with tissue paper so the bucket keeps its shape. Our Moroccan leather care guide covers conditioning, stains and how vegetable-tanned leather develops its patina.
