This square pierced brass wall sconce stacks two slim brass boxes above and below a plain brushed-brass centre block, mounted on a square wall plate. Every face of both boxes is cut through with a dense, flowing arabesque fretwork, so when the lamp is on, light pours from the open ends onto the wall above and below while the cut-outs throw a web of patterned shadows across the surface around it.

Serrouj Fretwork, Cut by Hand
The pattern is cut using Serrouj, the Moroccan technique of fretwork cutting with a fine jeweler’s saw. The thin blade is threaded through a tiny starter hole and guided by hand along each curve, so a single panel can take hundreds of individual cuts. Nothing is stamped or laser cut: every opening carries the slight variation of a hand-guided blade, and the shadows it casts feel drawn rather than printed.
The Artisan Behind the Sconce
This sconce comes from the workshop of Abdul Jalil, the master lamp artisan of Souq Nhas, Marrakech’s old copper and brass market, where he has worked at the same bench for over 30 years. Serrouj is one of the three techniques he practices, alongside Dinanderie hand-hammering and Naqsh hand-engraving.
Where It Works Best
Hung in pairs, the sconce frames a mirror, a headboard or a front door, turning a plain wall into a field of moving pattern. A row along a café banquette or hotel corridor builds a warm rhythm of light and shadow at eye level. The square profile and plain centre block keep it architectural enough for modern interiors while the fretwork brings Moroccan character.
Care
The clear protective coating helps shield the brass, so it does not need polishing. Dust with a soft, dry cloth or a soft brush to reach the cut-outs, and avoid metal polish or abrasive cleaners, which can damage the coating. For general guidance on brass, see our brass care and polishing guide.
