Handwoven Purple Cactus Silk Rug from the Atlas Mountains

This purple cactus silk rug brings together hand-spun Sabra fibers and wool in a flatweave construction, measuring 39.4 x 59.1 x 0.4 in (100 x 150 x 1 cm) — a versatile size suited to a living room accent, a bedroom focal point, or a layered entryway. The rich purple ground is dyed with natural vegetable dyes and patterned with geometric diamond and cross motifs in lavender and cream, following a tradition of Amazigh (Berber) textile design that stretches back generations across the Atlas highlands.

What Makes This Rug Different

  • Dimensions: 39.4 x 59.1 x 0.4 in (100 x 150 x 1 cm) — fits a bedside, reading nook, or under a small coffee table
  • Pile height: Flatweave — a thin, flexible textile that lies flat and works well in low-clearance spaces
  • Material: Sabra cactus silk and wool — Agave-derived fibers blended with wool for a lustrous, silk-like hand feel with natural durability
  • Dyes: Natural/vegetable dyes — plant-based colorants that produce rich, varied purple tones
  • Pattern: Geometric Berber diamond and cross motifs — traditional Amazigh symbols carrying cultural meaning
  • Made to order: Each rug is woven to order with slight variations in pattern and color — no two pieces are identical

The Weavers Behind This Rug

This rug is made by the Tiftilin weavers of the Middle Atlas, Amazigh women who have passed this craft from mother to daughter across generations in the cedar-forested highlands south of Fès. Sabra cactus silk rugs are woven from Agave plant fibers that are hand-spun, vegetable-dyed, and embroidered on flat looms — a process unique to the Atlas Mountains region of Morocco. Each rug is woven to order: please allow approximately 30 days of production time before your rug ships.

Care & Styling

Cactus silk flatweaves reward simple, consistent care. Vacuum regularly on the lowest suction setting (no beater bar), rotate every six months to even wear, and spot-clean only with cold water and mild soap. Slight color differences between dye lots are inherent to natural vegetable dyes and should be expected — they are part of what makes each rug one of a kind. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight to preserve the dyes. For full care instructions, visit our Moroccan wool rug care guide.

Questions About This Rug

Is this rug reversible?

Yes — both sides are finished and usable. The flatweave construction has no dominant pile direction, so you can flip it to extend wear life or change the look. Both sides carry the same geometric pattern with a slight sheen variation depending on how light hits the sabra fibres. Rotating between sides is especially useful in areas with directional foot traffic, as it distributes wear evenly.

Is a flatweave cactus silk rug suitable for high-traffic areas?

The flatweave construction sits approximately 1 cm (0.4 in) thick — low-profile and durable, but best suited to moderate-traffic spaces such as a bedroom, study, or under a coffee table rather than a front hallway under heavy daily use. In moderate-traffic settings it performs well; use a non-slip rug pad on smooth floors to prevent movement and protect the weave at the edges.

Will this rug fit under an interior door?

Most likely yes. The flatweave construction is only 1 cm (0.4 in) thick, which clears standard interior door thresholds. Measure your door’s underside clearance against the rug’s 0.4 in profile before laying it — most interior doors allow 1–2 cm of clearance. External or older doors with tighter clearances should always be measured individually before purchase.
