This is a barrad — the traditional Moroccan copper teapot that has been the vessel for atay since the tea ceremony first took root in Marrakech. Copper base, silver plating, three small feet, and a band of hand-engraved geometric and floral patterns that takes 5 to 7 days of skilled work to complete. Made in the Semmarine quarter of Marrakech’s medina as it has always been made.
Key Features & Benefits
- Copper Base with Silver Plating: Copper’s exceptional heat conductivity distributes warmth evenly across the base and body — extracting the full flavour from gunpowder green tea and fresh mint. The bright silver plating gives it the appearance of the silver range while retaining copper’s thermal advantage.
- Three Small Feet: The teapot sits on three small feet, raising it above the tray surface — a traditional footed form that distinguishes the barrad and adds stability during the height-pour.
- Hand-Engraved Geometric Band: A band of geometric X-patterns and floral medallions is hand-engraved around the lower body. Each engraving band requires 5 to 7 days of skilled work using the naqsh technique applied in Marrakech’s metalworking tradition.
- Lid with Clasp: The low dome lid has a small latch clasp that holds it closed during pouring from height — a functional detail specific to the barrad form, absent on display-only teapots.
- Available in 3 Sizes: Sized for different service scales — from an intimate two-person setting to a large ceremonial service.
The Artisan Story
The barrad is made in Marrakech’s Semmarine quarter — the medina district where copper and brass metalworking has been practised for centuries. Kamal and his team work copper using the same technique as the silver-plated brass pieces in the collection: hand-engraving applied with a steel chisel, no machine work, geometric patterns built repeat by repeat across the surface. Copper is softer than brass and responds differently to the chisel, which is why engraved copper pieces carry a longer production time. Read about Kamal’s metalworking practice.

Your Questions Answered
Q: What is a barrad?
A: Barrad is the Moroccan Darija word for the traditional tea teapot — it translates loosely as “cooler,” referencing how copper’s heat conductivity keeps tea at a consistent serving temperature. The barrad is the central vessel of the Moroccan atay ceremony and is traditionally made from copper.
Q: What makes this copper teapot different from the silver-plated brass teapots in the collection?
A: The base material is copper rather than brass. Copper conducts heat faster and more evenly than brass, which affects how the tea brews. The silver plating gives both the same bright exterior finish — the difference is in the metal beneath and in the engraving time (copper is softer and takes longer to engrave precisely).
Q: What is the lid clasp for?
A: The small latch holds the lid closed during the Moroccan height-pour, when the teapot is tilted at a steep angle to pour from 30–40cm above the glass. Without the clasp, the lid would fall during the pour.
A: This teapot is handcrafted from high-quality brass with [silver plating/nickel plating/stainless steel interior - adjust based on product]. The brass body provides excellent heat retention while the [plating type] ensures safe, rust-free use with boiling water and prevents metallic taste.
