A Pouf That Makes Texture the Centerpiece

Every surface of this braided leather square ottoman is wrapped in a handwoven herringbone pattern — strips of full-grain goat leather interlaced by hand into a tight diagonal braid that catches light differently from every angle. Made to order by Abdelilah and the leather artisans behind our poufs in Marrakech, the braid runs continuously across the top and sides, giving the ottoman a tactile richness that smooth leather cannot match. Available in five sizes with a stuffed or unstuffed option, it works equally well as floor seating, a footrest, or a low table with a tray on top — a piece for someone furnishing a room with character and warmth.

Construction & Surface Detail

  • Square shape: available in five sizes from 16″ to 23″ — see size chart for exact dimensions
  • Full-grain goat leather: supple goatskin hand-braided in a herringbone weave across the entire surface
  • Herringbone braid: narrow strips of leather are hand-woven in a diagonal chevron pattern that covers top, sides, and base — no surface is left plain
  • Zipper base: a concealed zipper at the bottom allows you to open, fill, and refill the pouf
  • Stuffed or unstuffed: choose stuffed (arrives ready to use, filled with polystyrene foam and cotton) or unstuffed (ships flat — lowers freight cost and lets you customize firmness)
  • Slight color variation: natural with hand-dyed leather — tonal shifts between strips are a mark of handmade work, not a defect
  • Weight capacity: holds up to ~250 lb (115 kg) when filled

The Craft Behind This Pouf

Abdelilah, the master leather artisan behind our poufs, works in the souk workshops of Marrakech, where he and his team cut full-grain goatskin into narrow strips before hand-weaving each strip into the herringbone braid that covers every surface. In Marrakech’s Souk Talaa leather district, artisans hand-cut and hand-braid goat-leather strips into a herringbone weave that takes roughly twice the material and three times the labor of a smooth-panel pouf. The braid is assembled directly onto the pouf form, ensuring the weave sits flush and tight under pressure — firm enough to hold a seated adult, flexible enough to yield under weight.

Filling Your Pouf

This ottoman is available stuffed (filled with polystyrene foam and cotton, ready to use on arrival) or unstuffed (ships flat, lowering your freight cost). If you choose unstuffed, fill it yourself with shredded foam, recycled fabric scraps, or densely packed old clothing — materials that hold shape under load without compressing flat over time. Follow our step-by-step guide to filling your pouf for exact fill volumes, recommended materials, and how to achieve a firm seating height. Do not use loose polyfill or feathers, which shift and compress unevenly.

Care

Wipe the braided leather surface with a barely damp cloth, working along the herringbone lines; never saturate. Condition every three to six months to keep the goatskin supple and prevent the braid from drying or cracking. Full guidance, including storage and stain removal, is in our leather care guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does this square pouf come filled or empty?

A: We offer both options! You can choose a pre-stuffed pouf with premium polyester filling ready to use, or select the unstuffed version with a bottom zipper to fill yourself. The unstuffed option dramatically reduces shipping costs and allows you to customize the firmness to your preference.

Q: What do I fill it with and how much?

A: For a 16x16" square: 50-60 ounces of polyester fiberfill. For 18x18": 60-70 ounces. You can also use old clothes or towels—about 3/4 to one full laundry basket compressed tightly.

Q: How do I fill a square pouf so the corners don't look saggy?

A: This is critical! Pack all four corners FIRST, pushing filling deep into each corner until they're very firm. Then stuff the edges, and fill the center last. Soft corners = saggy pouf. The corners should feel almost hard initially. See our complete filling guide.

Q: Why are the corners of my square pouf collapsing?

A: They weren't packed firmly enough. Unzip and add more filling specifically to the corners. Square poufs need extra-firm corner packing to maintain their angular shape—this is the #1 mistake people make.

Q: How firm should a square pouf be?

A: Very, very firm—especially in the corners. It should feel too hard when you first fill it. The square shape loses definition quickly if under-stuffed, unlike round poufs which are more forgiving.

Q: Can it hold a person's weight?

A: Yes! When properly filled (especially the corners), this square pouf supports up to 250 pounds. Make sure corners are packed tight for stability—soft corners make it feel unstable when you sit.

Q: Is a square pouf better than round for using as a table?

A: Yes! The flat edges align perfectly with furniture and don't roll or shift. The angular top is more stable for trays, drinks, or books. It looks intentional as a table, not improvised.

Q: How do I clean the leather on a square pouf?

A: Wipe all surfaces with a soft, dry cloth weekly—the flat top collects dust. Blot spills immediately. Pay attention to the corner seams; use a small brush to clean dust from edges. Condition the leather every 6-12 months.

Q: How long does shipping take?

A: 2-3 days for production, then 7-15 days standard shipping (USA/Europe) with free shipping. Square poufs pack flatter than round ones, making them economical to ship. Express options available.

Q: Is this handmade and how long will it last?

A: Yes, handcrafted in Marrakech by master artisans. Creating perfect 90-degree corners in leather requires exceptional skill. With proper care and firm stuffing, it will last 10-20+ years. The leather develops a beautiful patina over time.
